Yamaha Tenere 700

The Yamaha Tenere 700 is an adventure motorcycle, prized for its off-road capability, design, and versatile performance on any terrain.

Whether cruising along the Coromandel Peninsula’s scenic shores or conquering the challenging trails of Fiordland National Park, the Yamaha Tenere 700 delivers reliability and excitement. With comfortable ergonomics for long rides and ample ground clearance for off-road escapades, it’s the perfect companion to explore New Zealand’s natural beauty. Whether navigating twisty roads on the North Island or traversing the remote wilderness of the South Island, this adventure motorcycle offers the freedom to explore the Land of the Long White Cloud to the fullest.

“Once you reach 70 mph or so in fifth or sixth gear, the bike purrs right along. There is a fair amount of roll-on acceleration available at speed, which is really impressive considering it’s only a 321cc engine. Wind protection is good, as I was able to get tucked nicely behind the windscreen on the highway – the more you ride it the better it gets- comfortable and accessible yet still sporty”

Couldn’t agree more. Perfect for those on a budget or wanting a lightweight hire motorbike with a low seat height but still enough get up and go to get gone. Use this for a quick trip around the South Island or a complete New Zealand tour, she’ll love it either way.

One of our taller rental motorcycles but very popular with its powerful 85bhp twin cylinder engine giving a lovely throaty roar as you take on New Zealand’s roads.  The large capacity fuel tank holds enough to ride from one side of the South Island to the other (Christchurch to Hokitika) plus you can carry enough luggage for the entire tour as you go, all thanks to the BMW Vario side cases and top box.

The BMW F850GSA is a relative lightweight motorbike.  The claimed dry weight is listed at 185 kg or 407 lbs, while its real-life weight is around 205kg, this might sound on the heavy side but the F800GS feels and handles far lighter than it actually is.  Standard seat height is 34.6 inches, making it one of the tallest hire motorcycles on our fleet.

Trev (Mr Fix It) picked his up on a Thursday afternoon and clocked up over 3,000k by the following Monday, he grinned from ear to ear as he covered most of New Zealand in just three days!

It’s powered by a 1,261cc V-Four engine mated to a 5-speed transmission that powers the rear wheel with a shaft drive. A massive 7.7 gallon fuel tank feeds the engine, and combined with Honda’s EPA estimate of 35 mpg, produces a theoretical cruising range of well over 400km, not bad for a rental motorcycle.

Standard touring-friendly features include integrated, lockable and removable saddlebags, anti-lock brakes, and an electrically operated windshield. The front suspension offers 4.6 inches of travel, while the rear preload can be set using a dial just behind the engine.

Adjustable seat height, comfortable riding position, positive handling all help make this a true dream machine. So whether you’re riding two up on a three week tour or just want to have a couple of days fun the ST1300 is a great choice.

Did someone ask about torque?  Yep, it’s got heaps, bucket loads in fact.

HONDA Africa Twin CRF1000, fully automatic gearshift with manual override – what a beast!  I’m seriously thinking about trading in my personal V-Strom 650 for one of these, the gear changes are incredibly smooth and I just love the paddles on the handle bar for manually changes, heaps of fun and a true mile eater.  And all those modes to play with, I’m in heaven…

BMW G650GS

Comfortable suspension, ample ground clearance and a remarkably low seat-height help make the BMW G650GS a more than capable middle-weight adventure bike. Off-road, the new Sachs suspension and 19-inch front wheel soak up rocks while on road it feels deceptively light and balanced, and almost as comfortable as its bigger brother, the R1200GS.  We also have lowered suspensions options bringing the seat height down to a very manageable 77cm.

This is a solid, no frills bike, fun to ride, lightweight, maneuverable but with enough power to put a smile on your face, the G650GS’s single-cylinder lump pulls from virtually no rpm. Off-road, in a low gear, it can be barely turning faster than tick-over and a snap of the throttle will still pull you up hills. On road it offers a good, linear power curve and 60Nm or torque to keep you rolling. An ideal bike if you want to get off the beaten track for a while but still have plenty in reserve to overtake those pesky campervans.

An awesome all rounder best describes the Suzuki DR650, equally at home in the mud as it is on the highway.  Cruises along comfortably at legal speeds with still plenty in reserve for those passing lanes.  The seat (that bugger of an OEM seat) has been modified to cushion your buttocks with fairy like softness so you wont walk like John Wayne after dismounting from a long day in the saddle.  ‘High Ho Silver’ and off you go! (or was that the Lone Ranger?)

Note that this rental motorcycle is LAMS Approved and comes with Kriega OS-18 panniers, more than enough luggage space for a tour around New Zealand. *Dry Pack available on request only.

Good old air cooled single cylinder four stroke. Simple, lightweight, reliable and light on fuel. You really can tour New Zealand’s South Island on one of these, you won’t get any speeding tickets but will have fun waving at those who have as you cruise past at a steady 85km/hr (if the winds behind).

Being slightly more serious, these LAMS Approved Suzuki GN125,s are actually a pretty good cheap rental motorcycle..   They will get you to wherever you want to go plus you’ll have fun along the way.  It’s amazing how many people will just wander up to you for a chat and will probably tell you they had one when they were a boy.  You are allowed to take these motorbikes on all of the roads which are usually banned for hire motorcycles so if you fancy taking on the Nevis Road or scooting away up 90 mile beach then go ahead and book one.  Ok the specs aren’t high, around 10hp and a bit of torque hidden somewhere in the crankcase, but they’ll sit all day at a million rpm and still want more.  Easy, neutral riding position, electric start and all the basics make these a fun way of getting around.
Err, don’t take a pillion…unless it’s just for the short trip to Christchurch.

PS, it really is possible to rack up big k’s on these bikes, see Clives TT2000 2018 Ride
